Familiar Publishing FAQ’s
Your Work, Our Passion
You have the idea, the game or even the concept. We have the skills, the team and the experience to bring your dream to life!
No Matter The Size, You Count!
Be it the biggest or smallest project we do; you have our dedication. Every project is equal in our eyes, and we do not take on more than we can handle, so we don’t sacrifice our integrity.
Build a Brand
When you work with us, you leave the project with a brand. We set you up to expand on that brand, with direction towards possible expansions or further markets we can push your game into.
F.A.Q.
Why should I choose you over going to a well-known publisher?
We will never discourage you from trying to get an offer from a larger publisher. We know through personal experience that big publishers have exceptional rejection rates; offer very little to designers, if they’re willing at all to take your idea on and more likely just pay you for your idea, bastardise it and give you little-to-no credit.
What we offer is a way for you to not only make money, keep your game and keep it true to your idea.
How do I show you my game or idea?
There are many ways you can get in touch with us:
- You can email us and set up a time to sit down with us and go through your game.
- You can attend one of our screening days, look at our home page for details.
- You can come in-store and let us know about your game.
Do I need a physical copy of the game to present to you?
Absolutely not! However, it does make it easier. We have a keen eye for games, so as long as you have a rough representation of how you want your game to play, we will happily have a look and play. Even if you have an idea, we will listen and give you an idea if we think there’s enough potential to sit down at a later stage.
We’re happy to look at game concepts via:
- Physical
- TableTop Sim
- Drawn Description
- Elaborate hand gestures
Do I need my own art or can I use artwork I already have?
While we prefer you to have your own artwork or at least an art mock up at hand.
We have you covered if you don’t, we have a team of skilful artists onboard, However if their style isn’t inline with the project, we have a network of trusted artists we can utilise.
How much do game designers make?
Typically, publishers will pay between 3-7% of a game. This is based off the wholesale price of the game.
We at Familiar Publishing start our contracts (and go no lower) at 6% and depending on ongoing partnership can reach 10%; with a possibility of reaching beyond that depending on the situation.
Things to note; our percentage offered is of total funding secured if we use crowdfunding to fund your game; otherwise it is of total of sales to distributors. You keep the rights to your game after a period of publishing, with other publishers you will not get to keep your rights to your game; this is one of the key reasons we started the company.
Do I need to pay for anything?
No, is the simple answer.
The only thing we suggest you pay for is a trademark on your game; you can do this here.
Other than that, you don’t need to pay for anything, we take care of all the costs.
We do supply you with a detailed costing at the end and reports at intervals
Do I need to pay tax on money made, or do you pay it for me?
Sadly, you’ll need to pay tax on all money that you receive, as this is considered income and is declared by us.
